I know, I know it’s been a while since I posted something but believe me I did not forget about you. Usually people say: “ Well, I’ve been very busy.” That’s not the case for me—a Junior in Advertising— I’ve actually been paying my dues.
Since we’re fairly new to the ad industry, we don’t know exactly what’s waiting for us until we get there. Throughout school, we develop this idea about the industry: Glamour, traveling, fancy parties, happy hours after work, Award shows…
Wait, let’s back up a bit. You’re a Junior remember? You won’t get to do any of that. Well… that’s all not true, you’ll get to do a lot of drinking after working late. That’s for sure.
One thing that I notice in many young graduates is that they think they know it all, they think they’re rockstars. Talk about huge egos… Yeah, Creative Directors don’t like those kind of juniors.
No matter how much you think you know, you HAVE TO pay your dues. Everyone did at some point. You’ll get to be a rockstar one day, but learn first, prove yourself and always stay humble. You won’t believe how many jerks with huge egos exist in the industry. Don’t be one of them. Do the right thing, pay your dues.
Someone wise told me: “In advertising, you will be underpaid the first half of your career, and overpaid the second half” Be patient, it’ll come.
Another someone told me: “Strive for well-calloused egos” Take criticism, make mistakes, learn, then move on.
